Handgun Repair Shop Frequently Asked Questions

Handgun Repair Shop, Gunsmith for modern and antique handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

It's easy to ship your firearms for repair.

Include a note inside the package describing work needed, your return address, phone number & email address.

DO NOT SHIP AMMUNITION with the firearm. Package your unloaded firearm in a sturdy cardboard box that will allow at least a couple of inches of padding all the way around.

For the best protection of your firearm put it in one of the inexpensive foam lined plastic gun cases and then put the case in a sturdy cardboard box. Place a note describing repairs or modifications wanted, your return address, phone number & email address, inside the box with your firearm.

Take the package to your nearest package shipper (FedEx will accept handguns and long guns. US Postal Service will accept only long guns or Curios & Relics manufactured before 1898. UPS accepts shipments of handguns and long guns from Daily Pickup accounts and at their Customer Centers). Tell the counter person that you are shipping your firearm or parts to a licensed FFL dealer for repairs. Be sure to purchase enough insurance to cover your firearm in case of shipper loss.

I will disassemble, clean, inspect, & advise you if your firearm needs any additional repairs before proceeding with repairs requested. When repairs or modifications are completed I will email, postal mail, or phone your bill info, whichever you prefer. When payment is received, and has cleared at my bank, your firearm will be shipped to the return address you provided.

Don't advertise that your package may contain a firearm anywhere on the outside of the package. Use this shipping address to send your firearm for repair or customization to:

An excellent article on shipping firearms can be found at The Gun Zone – Shipping Firearms

An individual firearm owner may ship a firearm to a FFL licensed dealer or licensed manufacturer for repairs or customization. The licensed party who does the work may then ship the firearm back to the owner's address when repairs or customization have been completed. See May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?

Federal Express

FedEx accepts handguns and long guns for shipment from individuals "when either the shipper or recipient is a licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, licensed dealer or licensed collector and is not prohibited from making such shipments by federal, state or local regulations". If you need any more information see FedEx Express U.S. Terms and Conditions , then click 15. Firearms, or call 1 800 463-3339.

U.S. Postal Service

Rifles, shotguns, air guns, black powder muzzle loaders, and antique firearms manufactured prior to 1898 (designated Curios & Relics), may be shipped using the US Postal Service. See May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U. S. Postal Service? For more information about mailing firearms, go to the USPS Postal Explorer and type "Firearms" in the search box. Then click on the first link "DMM 601 Mailability". This takes you to "11.0 Other Restricted or Nonmailable Matter", then scroll down to "11.1.2 Handguns", "11.2 Antique Firearms", and "11.3 Rifles and Shotguns".

UPS

UPS firearms shipping policy states "Firearms will be transported only between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors, as defined in the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, law enforcement agencies of the United States or of any department or agency thereof and law enforcement agencies of any state or department agency, or political subdivision thereof, and between persons not otherwise prohibited from shipping firearms by federal, state or local law and when such shipment complies with all applicable federal, state and local laws."

Additionally their "Shipping Firearms" page states "You can only ship your package that contains a firearm from UPS daily pickup accounts and through UPS Customer Centers", and "Your packages that contain firearms will not be accepted for shipment at UPS Drop Boxes, with UPS SonicAir® service, at locations of The UPS Store or any third party retailer, or with international services." If you need any more information see United Parcel Service firearms policy , or call 1 800 742-5877.

While on the subject of shipping I want to relate my experiences with a shipping company that does not accept firearms shipments. In early February 2003 I made a personal computer software purchase that the manufacturer shipped by Airborne Express. I did not receive my merchandise. Trying to resolve this problem was exasperating, to say the least. I got several differing explanations of where Airborne Express said they had placed the package they delivered while I was not at home. Not being able to resolve the issue with Airborne Express I contacted the manufacturer. They made a second complimentary shipment of a lesser “CD without the manual” product to replace the lost shipment. I was able to get the software installed, but I never did get the actual “boxed software with manual” package I had ordered. I would not recommend shipping anything via Airborne Express.
