Handgun Repair Shop wants to be your gunsmith. You will receive a good job at a fair price.

Gunsmithing is not limited to handgun repair at Handgun Repair Shop. I can repair and rebuild out of production and antique hand guns, rifles, and shotguns. I have successfully found the parts needed to repair antique handguns, rifles, and shotguns dating back to pre Civil War and beyond. About 70% of the gun repair work that arrives at my shop is 50, 100, 150 years old or older. I can install barrel liners to restore worn or rusted bores, and re chamber rifles in both standard and wildcat calibers.

I have rebuilt modern handguns, rifles, and shotguns, as well as some that were all but destroyed in a house fire while stored in a "fireproof" gun safe. I can also do the more routine repairs of worn parts, cleaning, lubrication & maintenance. I can build customized 1911 type pistols, do trigger jobs, tactical & concealed carry reliability, and de horning bevel work. I can order and install custom stocks, sights and scopes.

About Douglas E. Bates, owner,

Mechanical abilities were fostered early in my life by my father, a machinist and tool & die maker. He bought me an "Erector Set" at age 5, then taught me to measure to thousandths of an inch with a micrometer, and bought me a "Visible V 8 Engine" model to assemble at age 12. I refinished my grandfather's single shot 12 Gauge shotgun somewhere around that time as well. I rebuilt the single cylinder gasoline engine on my mini bike by myself at age 12.

As a teenager I thought I would like a career as an auto or diesel mechanic. I graduated "Honor Roll" from 2 technical schools where I learned to disassemble, diagnose, and repair all major parts of both automobiles and tractor trailers. Working in a garage did not satisfy my creative side, so I switched to a career in construction.

As a carpenter for 29 years I measured, cut and fit many different types of construction materials all day every working day to build homes, hospitals, stores and schools. I became known for quality trim carpentry work.

With this kind of background it was very natural for me to start doing my own gunsmithing as soon as I became interested in firearms. Over 24 years ago I started purchasing gun repair manuals, machinery and tools to do gunsmithing for myself, friends and coworkers. I frequently received praises, and was encouraged by satisfied friends and coworkers that I should open my own gunsmithing business.

In March of 1998 I formally opened my gunsmithing business. While wondering what name to choose for my new business I was looking through my personal gun collection and realized that I own twice as many handguns as long guns. Handguns are my favorite type of firearm to own and work on. That is how I came up with the name "Handgun Repair Shop".

I did not know what internet search engines were at the time that I named my business. The name Handgun Repair Shop has turned out to be a high ranking match for people searching the internet for handgun repair.

In April, 2002 my wife and I separated, leaving me with temporary custody of our two young daughters. In September, 2002 I won physical custody of our two daughters. Since then, the weekday evening shop hours are mostly tied up with "Mister Mom" duties. During the evening hours I have managed to answer email and phone calls, and take care of the occasional local customer picking up a firearm they bought over the internet or had me repair for them.

I can concentrate on the repair orders during the day while my daughters are in school. Repair order shipments have been steadily increasing during the last four years. I now have a continuous waiting list of repair orders. Please be patient. I work on completing repairs on a "The first one in is the first one out" basis.
